Hello there! I'm Shelley Schmidt, the designer behind Studio Schmidt Designs.
I'm an emerging surface pattern designer, illustrator, and maker with a passion for color and a love of drawing, painting, and sewing. I love to design unique statement patterns, whimsical illustrations, and handmade products that make everyday life just a bit more fun! I have a quirky design sensibility, a love of traveling to new places (both near and far), and I always carry a sketchbook with me.
A Midwesterner at heart, I was born and raised near the banks of the mighty Mississippi in St. Louis, Missouri. After living in Chicago for 3 amazing years, my husband and I moved to the sunny city of Atlanta in 2017. We currently live in a wonderful neighborhood called Decatur.
I've been known to find new ideas in the most unlikely places - you just never know when inspiration is going to strike! Bustling city streets. Secluded forests. A junkyard full of rusted metal. A 400-year-old woven rug. The lyrics to a song that I've listened to hundreds of times. The shape and color of a puddle during an unexpected rainstorm. I delight in the ordinary beauty of the world around me and I use what inspires me to create playful designs and illustrations that I can share with the world.
Learning is a lifelong pursuit of mine and I continually find myself fascinated by new subjects, artistic mediums, and topics. During college, I studied apparel design and apparel merchandising at Dominican University (River Forest, IL) and I gained additional practical experience through several design internships and an amazing study abroad experience in Paris, France. After graduation, I decided I was also interested in learning more about business, so I continued my studies in marketing and entrepreneurship. After earning my MBA at Saint Louis University, I spent several years working in various design, product development, and merchandising roles for companies (both large and small) within the apparel and textile industries.
While I knew that I enjoyed working in the textile and apparel industries, I wanted to follow my own path and find a way to get back to what I really loved doing the most - design. I took a big leap and decided to begin developing my own company: Studio Schmidt Designs. I now split my creative energy between designing artwork and making and selling my own line of playfully-patterned handmade products.
